I remember when I used to wear my baggy cotton T-Shirt to exercise thinking it was covering up my body.  Investing in fitness attire seemed to be silly — after all I was planning on getting smaller and I would have to buy new clothes soon enough. Over the years I have watched countless transformations and one of the things I have learned is that what you wear can help motivate you to keep moving. The right workout wear can inspire feelings of enthusiasm.

Here are 6 things to look for when buying exercise apparel.

  • Performance Wear —  When you exercise your task is to move your body in different planes of motion to create the benefits of cardio-respiratory endurance, body fat reduction and increased muscle hypertrophy. Dri-Wic wear allows for the sweat to evaporate so you can stay drier while doing cardio. It also reduces chaffing. Finding the right sports bra and sneakers also helps. Begin to dress and act like an athlete.
  • Comfort – Choose clothing that you can move freely in. Fitted clothing but not skin tight. Look for something with spandex and don’t shop by size.
  • Stay away from “should” when it comes to size — Getting caught up in thinking that you should be a size ____ often leads us to wear clothes that are to loose or to tight.  No one looks at you and says she’s a size 8 or and she’s a size 14, they say,  “She looks great in her outfit”. Sizes generally run smaller or bigger than we think they “should” be.
  • Activity Appropriate – Before buying that flowing top consider how it won’t keep you covered in downward dog, before buying the exercise shorts/ pants consider how it will look in a seated straddle split — the last thing you want to do is a football squat and have your pants rip — yikes! You can’t go wrong with a pair of capris that are fitted but non-binding and a fitted t-shirt or sleeveless top that is fitted but non-binding.
  • Think annually— Once you have the basics covered you can have fun and pick the workout gear that makes you feel fabulous. Thinking about how you can mix and match throughout the seasons will help save you time and money. Layers are a key to success. If you find a top or pair of pants that work, write down the name or purchase more than one and come back at a later date to wear them again.

 

When you wear workout gear that fits well and enhances your performance you will feel more confident during your workout. Then you can focus 100% on your session and create the body, health and vitality of your dreams!
